MUMBAI – The output of all crops in Karnataka, barring sugarcane, is expected to increase in the 2019-20 (Jul-Jun) season due to higher acreage and yield, a senior official said.

Adequate rain in the state–23% above-normal, at 1,033.3 mm, in Jun-Sep last year–led to a rise in acreage of most crops and boosted productivity.

The production of maize in the state is expected to surge 28% to 4.8 mln tn due to a sharp rise in yields. Maize yields have increased to 3,414 kg/ha from 2,777 kg/ha a year ago, the state farm department's fourth advance estimate showed.

Rice output is seen rising 9% on year to 3.7 mln tn. The production of tur is projected to rise 12% to 1.1 mln tn. Karnataka is among the major producers of rice, maize and tur.

The state has pegged total foodgrain output at 13.6 mln tn in 2019-20 (Jul-Jun), compared with 11.0 mln tn a year ago. Total oilseed output is seen rising to 1.2 mln tn, 32% higher from a year ago.

Cotton production is projected at 2.0 mln bales (1 bale = 170 kg), around 41% higher from a year ago. Sugarcane output is estimated to fall 33% to 31.6 mln tn, due to lower acreage.

The following is the fourth advance estimate of output in Karnataka for the 2019-20 (Jul-Jun) crop year, in tn, compared with year-ago figures, and year-on-year change:
