AHMEDABAD – Gujarat State Petronet Ltd plans to spend up to 15 bln rupees over the coming three years to lay new pipelines and debottleneck its existing network, senior company officials told Informist.

Currently, Gujarat State Petronet has 2,740 km of gas pipeline network with a capacity to transport 37 mscmd. Post the expansion, it would have a 3,250-km pipeline network with capacity to transport 50 mscmd of natural gas.

Among the key projects Gujarat State Petronet seeks to undertake are a connectivity pipeline to Petronet LNG Ltd's Dahej terminal, the capacity of which is being expanded from 17.5 mln tn to 22.5 mln tn a year.

"The current pipeline is old and choked during peak demand season. The upgraded 36-inch pipeline connecting Dahej LNG terminal to Bhadbhut, about 39 km away, has already received approval from the country's natural gas regulator Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board," said another senior official. "This pipeline alone could cost nearly 3 bln rupees."

Another project is laying a new 90-km, 36-inch pipeline from Jafrabad to Chhara to connect the upcoming 5 mln tn per annum LNG terminal of Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd at Chhara. Gujarat State Petronet has already completed the first phase of the pipeline from Chhara. "The second phase is under construction and the pipeline would run parallel to an existing 18-inch pipeline," the official said.

The state-government-owned gas transportation company also plans to connect Jamnagar and Okha through a pipeline. Vedanta Ltd and a company associated with Sun Pharma Ltd have been allotted offshore gas fields in the Gulf of Kutch. They are expected to begin producing and bringing their offshore natural gas to a landfill point at Okha, near Dwarka. This would be a 110-km connectivity pipeline, which Gujarat State Petronet seeks to lay.

Another proposed project is connecting the 5 mln tn per annum Mundra LNG terminal to the ceramic tile making hub at Morbi. Currently, Mundra is connected to Anjar with a 65-km, 36-inch pipeline. From Anjar to Morbi, Gujarat State Petronet has an 18-inch pipeline. "This restricts transportation of LNG beyond 2 mln tn per annum from the Mundra terminal. The proposal is to have a 36-inch pipeline from Anjar to Morbi, which would be another over 100-km pipeline," the official said.

Gujarat State Petronet had earlier decided to lay a new 30-inch pipeline from Anjar to Chotila. Later, however, it proposed to lay a 270-km 36-inch pipeline from Anjar to Palanpur, and facilitate gas transportation from Mundra to the 1,834-km Mehsana-Bhatinda gas pipeline. "The proposal was not pursued for some reason. Now, GSPL is thinking of laying a 30-inch Anjar–Radhanpur pipeline and then seek PNGRB approval for the same," another official said.

At 1358 IST, shares of Gujarat State Petronet were down 0.8% at 315.30 rupees on the National Stock Exchange. End
